Developed in the early 1990's to replace the aging M551 Sheridan light tanks, the M8 Armored Gun System was built based on the idea of having a light tank that could be air lifted and dropped using C-130's. The M8 was ordered into production in 1995 however in 1997 the order was cancelled to free up budget for other projects. A total of six M8's were built. The role of the M8 is now filled in the US Army by the M1128 Mobile Gun System.
