The Panzer IV was a medium tank produced by Germany during World War II. It was originally designed to support infantry and to cooperate with the Panzer III tank, which was designed to attack armored forces. When the overall performance of the Panzer III tank was not enough for armored combat in the middle of World War II, the Panzer IV tank was converted into a main battle tank for use by armored divisions because the technology used was more mature and had more room for improvement than the Panzer III tank.
